Celebrity Portrait: Elizabeth Taylor
Andy Warhol admired famous actress Elizabeth Taylor so much, he was quoted saying: “It would be very
glamorous to be reincarnated as a great big ring on Liz Taylor's finger.” It is this admiration that lead to Warhol
creating his series of silk-screened portraits Liz. The image for the portrait was borrowed from publicity photographs for
Taylor’s movie Butterfield 8. Following Elizabeth Taylor’s death in 2011, the Andy Warhol Museum displayed
a memoriam of Warhol’s portraits honoring his friend. Also following her death, one of the paintings in the Liz series,
specifically Liz #5, sold for just under $27 million at auction. This shows just how revered Warhol’s paintings still are today.
