Celebrity Portrait: Mao Zedong
The Chinese political leader Mao Zedong, or Mao Tse Tung, is a far cry from the Hollywood icon Warhol
was known for painting. Created in 1973, the Mao series allowed Warhol to publically protest the totalitarian leader as
an “enemy of individualism.” Towering over fourteen feet tall, this work of art is thought to mimic similar propaganda that Mao
used throughout China. It’s also important to note that Warhol chose to use colors that would mimic women’s makeup
on Zedong’s face in some of the portraits.
